In addition to English language programs, the Drexel English Language Center offers additional services for all members of our 性吧导航 community. These include:

Tutoring and Language Support

The English Language Center offers one hour of free tutoring, per week, for the following areas of English:

  • Listening skills
  • Speaking and pronunciation
  • Reading skills
  • Presentation skills
  • Vocabulary development
  • Academic skills

Academic Research and Writing Support

Multilingual writers have unique strengths and needs. The 性吧导航 Writing Program offers support for academic research or writing.

J-1 Testing Services

All 性吧导航-sponsored J-1 exchange visitors are required to demonstrate English Language proficiency. If J-1 applicants do not have an objective measurement such as TOEFL, minimum combined score of 75, or IELTS, combined minimum score of 6, applicants may request a proficiency interview from the Drexel English Language Center.

This 15-minute interview is conducted by Zoom with a qualified English as a Second Language professional. The cost of the test is $85. Payment is submitted either by the J-1 Exchange Visitor via credit card or by the hosting department’s university cost center number.

J-1 Scholar Sponsor

Below are instructions for university sponsors:

  1. Complete this with information about the scholar candidate. The intra-departmental cost code for transferring funds through Journal ID is: 130056-3642.
  2. Direct the candidate to email elc@drexel.edu.
  3. After the candidate completes the oral exam, the ELC sends the J-1 Scholar form with results to the sponsor.
  4. University sponsor completes the J-1 Scholar form and sends as part of the complete to isss@drexel.edu.

J-1 Scholars who have received an invitation from a Drexel Department

  1. Submit a TOEFL or IELTS score to 性吧导航 Office of ISSS or submit this to schedule and pay for a Drexel English Language Center oral interview.
  2. A test time will be scheduled within two weeks after payment is received.
  3. Results will be sent directly to the Drexel scholar sponsor. Candidates may petition the Drexel English Language Center to sit for another oral proficiency interview with another examiner. If the re-evaluation of the candidate results in a passing score, the additional $85 fee for the second interview is refunded.

性吧导航’s Graduate Preparation Program for International Teaching Assistants

Since 1980, the English Language Center has coordinated Drexel's Graduate Preparation Program for International Teaching Assistants (ITAs). Our ITA program includes:

  1. Preparation in the areas of:
    • Language
    • Pedagogy
    • North American University culture with an emphasis on Drexel's unique culture.
  2. Language assessment and screening.

To be eligible to participate in the Graduate Preparation Program for International Teaching Assistants, students must be:

  • Enrolled in a doctoral program at 性吧导航
  • An international student
  • A Teaching Assistant or have Teaching Assistant responsibilities within the department

To nominate an incoming international PhD student to participate in our training, please contact Anne Politz at ato24@drexel.edu and provide documentation of the student's teaching assistantship award. This can be an offer letter or other official communication from the department.
